PRESS RELEASE: International Conference - The Modern Yacht The Royal Institution of Naval Architects - Small Craft Group
International Conference The Small Craft Group of the Institution are to hold the above International conference THE MODERN YACHT on the 18th & 19th March 1998, at the Forte Posthouse Hotel, Portsmouth. The conference will be of interest to many, including: Designers and Naval Architects, Yacht Builders, Owners, and Charter Operators. There will be 18 papers presented over the two days, by some of the World's leading industry professionals including: Jon Bannenberg, John Shuttleworth, Dr Keuning (Delft University), Bill Dixon, Ian Campbell (Wolfson Unit), Damon Roberts (Carbospars), Mr R Fogg (SP echnologies), and many others from seven different nations. The conference will focus on power as well as sailing yachts, the opening session being devoted to "megayachts". Ever larger sailing and power megayachts are being built, setting new standards in levels of expense, complexity, and extravagance. Owners often demand a unique vessel with a "look" and features which set them apart from the others. Sailing yacht performance analysis has developed considerably over the last five years, partly because of the significant investment made by America's Cup teams. Performance analysis by theoretical and experimental methods will be covered in detail. High performance hull and rig structures for sailing yachts allow benefits for racing and cruising yachts which will continue to be exploited in the future. The conference will look at structural design philosophies in addition to advanced materials. The general theme of "design for the future" will run throughout the conference.
